It is one of the 11 official languages in South Africa, having the widest geographical and racial distribution of all official languages in this country. Spoken by about 7 million people as a native language in South Africa and widely spoken or understood as a second or third language, Afrikaans is the third most spoken language in South Africa after Zulu and Xhosa. As a second and third language it is spoken by about 7 to 15 million people in and outside South Africa. Afrikaans is spoken also in Namibia, where it is a recognized minority language and where it is widely spoken as a second language and used as a lingua franca, and in some parts of Botswana.
