The Bosnian language uses most often the Latin alphabet. The Cyrillic alphabet is used less often but it is also accepted.
It is part of the Slavic group within the Indo-European family of languages and it is based on the Shtokavian dialect of Serbo-Croatian, on which also Serbian, Croatian and Montenegrin are based. The grammar and vocabulary of Bosnian are very similar to those of Serbian and Croatian so that speakers of these languages can understand each other very well. Before the dissolution of Former Republic of Yugoslavia, they formed the Serbo-Croatian language.
