Croatian is a Slavic language (within the Indo-European family of languages) and is based on the Shtokavian dialect, like Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin. Since speakers of these four languages can understand each other without difficulties, they are regarded by some linguists as varieties of a pluricentric language called Serbo-Croatian.
