Like other West Germanic languages (Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic), Danish developed from Old Norse, the language of Germanic peoples living in Scandinavia during the Viking period. Danish is mutually intelligible with Norwegian and Swedish to a large extent, with Norwegian being closer to Danish than Swedish.
Standard Danish is based on the Copenhagen dialect. Given the geography of the country, Danish has many dialects which are form three main groups: Insular Danish, Jutlandic and Eastern Danish (including the Bornholmian dialect).
Danish uses the Latin alphabet (with three additional letters), which came to Denmark together with Christianity and replaced the Runic alphabet.
The ISO language code for Danish is da.
