Kurdish belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. It is spoken mainly in Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. Up to 30 million people are estimated to speak Kurdish as a native language. It has official status in Iraq, along with Arabic.
The Kurdish languages form three main dialect groups: Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji), Central Kurdish (Soranji) and Southern Kurdish. Northern Kurdish (Kurmaji) is by far the most widespread dialect group and is spoken in Turkey, Syria, Iran, Iraq. It mainly uses the Kurdish-Latin script. Central Kurdish (Sorani) dialects are spoken in Iraqi Kurdistan and the Iranian Kurdistan Province. This dialect group uses a modified Arabic script with some Persian special characters and has recently started to use also the Latin script. Southern Kurdish dialects are spoken in Western Iran and an east-northern province of Iraq and are written using different alphabets, most commonly extensions of the two main Kurdish alphabets (Latin and Arabic).
The ISO language code for the Kurdish languages is ku.
