Latvian or Lettish is the official language of Latvia and is spoken by about 2 million speakers, out of who 1.4 million speak Latvian as a native language. Together with its sister language Lithuanian, with which it is mutually intelligible, it forms the Baltic group within the Indo-European family of languages. They are the only living Baltic languages and because they retain many archaic features of the Proto-Indo-European language, they are of special interest to linguists. Latvian has developed over several centuries from the language spoken by the Latgalian tribe, which assimilated features of the languages of the other neighboring tribes (Curonian, Semigallian and Selonian), which are all extinct now. Later it was heavily influenced by German (because the upper class was formed by the Baltic Germans), but also by Livonian, Estonian and Russian. During the Russian Empire and later during the Soviet occupation, Latvian was marginalized. During the process for independence at the beginning of the 1990s, Latvia proposed laws for the revival of the Latvian language. To counter the influence of Russian and English, government organizations have promoted the use of Latvian terms and linguistic purism.
There are three dialects of Latvian: the Livonian dialect, which was more affected by the Livonian language, the Middle dialect spoken in Central and Southwestern Latvia and on which Standard Latvian is based, and High Latvian dialect, spoken in Eastern Latvia.
Latvian uses the Latin alphabet with the addition of diacritics.
The ISO language code for Latvian is lv.
