Norwegian is a North Germanic language spoken by about 5 million people. It is the official language in Norway.
Within the Scandinavian language (all of which derived from Old Norse), Norwegian has a middle position between Danish and Swedish which makes it easier for Norwegians to understand both Danish and Swedish, than for the Danes or Swedes to understand each other.
Written Norwegian has two official standard forms: Norwegian Bokmål, based on the Danish language and used by 85-90% of Norwegians and Norwegian Nynorsk, based on Norwegian dialects and used by 10-15% of Norwegians. Norwegians learn both Bokmål and Nynorsk in school. There are also two unofficial forms of written Norwegian: Riksmål, closer to the Danish language than Bokmål and Høgnorsk, which is a more conservative form of Nynorsk and is used only by a very small number of people.
Spoken Norwegian has no official standard and Norwegians speak their own dialect in all circumstances.
Norwegian uses the same alphabet like Danish.
The ISO code for Norwegian is no.
