Portuguese is a Romance language originally native to Portugal and then expanded worldwide during colonial times. With about 245 million native speakers worldwide, it is the third most spoken European language as a mother tongue after Spanish and English. It is official language in Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea (co-official with Spanish and French), Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor (co-official with Tetum) and in Macau (China), where it is co-official with Chinese. The five African countries where Portuguese is an official language (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe) and which were former Portuguese colonies formed the PALOP organization for interstate cooperation. They are also called Lusophone Africa. In Equatorial Guinea, Portuguese was adopted as third official language recently although it is in fact not spoken in this country (with the exception of a Portuguese-based Creole which has only a small number of speakers). In India, in the former Portuguese colonies (such as Goa) Portuguese is now spoken only by the elderly population. With our team of experienced, bilingual
