Romanian belongs to the Romance family, which is a subgroup of the largest Indo-European family of languages. As a Romanian historian put it, it is a Latin island in a Slavic Ocean. It is the native language of about 24 million people who live mainly in Romania and Moldova, where Romanian is the official language. Another 4 million people speak Romanian as a second language. Apart from Romania and Moldova, it has official status also in Transnistria (unrecognized state) and Vojvodina, an autonomous province in Serbia with several official languages. It is also spoken by the Romanian communities living in neighboring countries to Romania: Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia. With our team of experienced, bilingual

Romanian has evolved from Latin within the Eastern Romance group, which comprises also Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian, which are considered by some linguists as languages, and by the majority of linguists as dialects of Romanian. To distinguish it from these three dialects, Romanian proper is also called Daco-Romanian.
Romanian (Daco-Romanian) has no dialects. There are only minor pronunciation and vocabulary variations in different regions of Romania, which pose no difficulties to translators.
In the group of Western Romance languages, the closest relative of Romanian is Italian with which it has a high percentage of vocabulary similarity. Therefore, Italian is the foreign language which is easiest to understand for Romanian speakers.
Romanian uses the Latin script plus five additional special letters marked by diacritics.
The ISO language code for Romanian is ro.
