The Thai script is an abugida script: consonants are written horizontally from left to right, vowels, however, do not form independent units, but they form units together with the consonants and can be placed before, after, above or before the consonants or in a combination of positions. Diacritics are used to mark tones.
Standard Thai is based on the Central Thai dialect (Thai is also called Siamese). Thai has many different dialects, which are to such a high degree divergent from Standard Thai, that they are classified as related languages by linguists and not as dialects. Native speakers, however, see them as regional varieties of Thai.
